ABOUT US
-
The Exister Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to shaping thoughtful, confident, and connected women at Harvard College. We offer our members a space to form lifelong friendships, grow through intentional experiences, and cultivate values that will guide them far beyond college.
Rooted in empowerment and respect, the organization fosters the kind of support system that strengthens women as they navigate who they are — and who they’re becoming.

The Exister Society was founded in the fall of 2017 in response to Harvard’s evolving policies around unrecognized single-gender social organizations. At a time when the administration was implementing sanctions to push social organizations toward coeducation, a group of women—many formerly affiliated with one of the campus’ co-ed social clubs—sought to create a new kind of space: one rooted in female empowerment, authentic connection, and community.
Formed initially on a whim, the Exister Society was born out of a desire to preserve the spirit of sisterhood in a changing social landscape. The organization’s first official event, a joint Harvard-Yale weekend trip with a men’s social club, set the tone for the inclusive and dynamic culture that would follow. By creatively navigating policy restrictions, including welcoming a single male member to maintain organizational viability, the Exister Society quickly established itself as a bold and empowering community. Its emblem, the butterfly, symbolizes transformation and growth—values that continue to define the organization’s mission and identity.
